Ventilating Your Pallets – Sara Williams

It is essential that goods are transported in a condition that doesn’t affect quality for when the end user is reached. This is particularly applicable for the food and drink industry, where produce require certain conditions to remain fresh.

Perforated pallet wrap is suitable for packing products that need good air circulation, the net like film allows air to move freely releasing condensation and allowing products to breathe.  This can reduce the chance of condensation damage to cardboard or rusting of metal.  Macro perforation also allows for quicker freezing, cooling and can prevent overheating.

Perforated pallet wrap is suitable for:

  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Dairy
  • Frozen goods
  • Flowers
  • Items with high moisture content
  • Dry products such as cereals and cardboard packaging

This product is available in both large and small holes in hand and machine rolls.

The Evolution of Darwin’s Dairy Label: From Flexo to Digital – Samuel Eyre

A particular label that holds considerable significance to Acorn is the dairy label of Darwin’s, which in 2015 became the first successful digital print on the Domino N600i.

NP & DJ Darwin Ltd, based Oxspring in Sheffield, is a producer of free range milk and has been our existing customer since 2007. When they initially proposed an idea for a label to go on their milk bottles our custom print capabilities were limited to flexography. Flexography or “flexo,” printing uses flexible raised image carrier, otherwise known as “plates,” which wrap around a cylinder. Before the printing process began plates were acquired in the approved style of Darwin. A plate is needed for every pantone colour used in the procedure. The original Darwin’s Dairy Semi Skimmed Milk label used a pantone Green on a plain white label:

2008

Although this label printed well and met Darwin’s requirements the introduction of the Domino digital printer in 2015 meant we could evolve the label into a more colourful and modern appearance. Creating digital labels is a process of printing a graphic file. This file is typically a PDF which can be simply edited using Adobe. Once the design is approved by the customer, the PDF is ripped using software which will convert the PDF into a format that the printer will identify.

Once the file has been successfully ripped and sent to the Domino, it arrives as a file to print. The Domino N600i uses UV inkjet technology which sprays the ink onto the substrate without the print heads touching. This therefore allows printing on a variety of materials using a wide range of colours. Darwin opted for Gloss White Poly on permanent adhesive which suitably met the durability required in the life span of a milk bottle label.

An Eggciting Easter Competition – Samuel Eyre

After a rather lovely bank holiday weekend of generous sunshine and over indulgence we reflect back to our Easter competition that ran between Monday 15th – Wednesday 17th April.

The idea was to take a picture of a mass bag of mini eggs acquired from one of our confectionery customers and have people on social media guess the total inside. (If you haven’t seen the egg count have a go .. answer at the bottom).

With the incentive of a chocolatey prize too hard to resist, an overwhelming response was triggered. Hundreds of people got involved in the Easter fun proving the competition to be a success, gaining followers on platforms, Twitter and Facebook.

The contest produced some late drama, as two people guessed one mini egg off the final count! A low budget video of a name being drawn out an inflatable hat concluded the winner as Katie from Newcastle. When Katie received her prizes she sent some lovely photos of her children enjoying them. Look at those smiles!

Due to the great response from this we aim to run future competitions and give out more great prizes. Keep posted!

937 final total

The Fruitpig Company – Adrian Williams

The Fruitpig Company, is an East-Anglian based artisan butchery producing traditional fresh blood black puddings, slow-cured bacon and other speciality meats from traditional breeds. With an increasing following of restaurants and butcheries, both locally and nationally, there was a need to reinforce the branding and support the revamp of the company’s website.

A printed sleeve to wrap around black pudding sticks had previously been produced, but was cumbersome to apply, both for Fruitpig in a busy production area and for retailers. The card sleeve was also not ideal in situ, exposed as it was to moisture and low temperatures. Fruitpig worked with Acorn Labels to create a simple generic product label, easy to apply and using material and adhesion fit for the job. The label was made a size suitable for affixing to both product sizes, with a design consistent with the look of the new website. Acorn handled the design and proofing process, completing the initial run in a matter of days in time to fulfil a large order.

The end result is a simple but effective improvement in branding for Fruitpig, as the company continues to expand having moved to new premises early in 2018. To find out why Fruitpig are supplying some of the best tables in the land, visit www.fruitpig.co.uk .

“This was our first venture with Acorn.  Their product and material knowledge was excellent and they really listened to our needs.  Their speed of turn-a-round during the various proofing stages was exceptional. Even though we changed a major design perameter nearer the end of the process, Acorn’s response still allowed us to supply a new and important customer on time.”
